Sverige köper sin olja av demokratier. Världen utvinner den i autokratier.Sweden buys its oil from democracies. The world extracts it in autocracies.

Three fifths of the world’s crude oil is pumped in countries without competitive elections. Four per cent of what Sweden buys is. The difference looks like a solved problem and is not, because oil is fungible: the price is set on a world market where autocracies hold the volume and nearly all the spare capacity.

Varför andelarna inte skyddarWhy the shares do not protect

One barrel substitutes for another, so the price is set globally. Sweden pays the world price whoever’s flag is on the tanker. Buying Norwegian protects against a cargo not arriving — not against what it costs.

Norway is the proof: a large net exporter whose own consumers paid European prices through 2022 like everybody else.

The United States is 21% of world production, and V-Dem classes it an electoral democracy rather than a liberal one. Count it as liberal and the bottom class in the world bar goes from 2.6% to 24%, and the dark blue share of Sweden’s imports from 57% to 81%.

Mexico as an electoral autocracy is contestable too. Freedom House and the EIU draw the lines elsewhere. There is no neutral answer, only an answer per classification.

Eurostat reports the trading counterparty. A cargo loaded in Rotterdam may have been pumped elsewhere, so the countries in the bar are who Sweden trades with, not necessarily where the oil came out of the ground.

Concentration in oil reaches an importer through the price. In uranium it reaches them through the pipe: Kazakhstan alone supplies 39% of mining, and no spot market is deep enough to swap Kazakh pounds for Canadian ones at short notice. Price risk is shared by everyone; delivery risk falls on whoever signed the contract.

Import: Eurostat nrg_ti_oil, råolja per partnerland, Sverige 2024, 18 165 tusen ton. Produktion: Energy Institute Statistical Review of World Energy 2026, 2025 års produktion. Regim: V-Dem Regimes of the World 2025 via Our World in Data. Without the Hot Air, 2026.Imports: Eurostat nrg_ti_oil, crude oil by partner country, Sweden 2024, 18,165 thousand tonnes. Production: Energy Institute Statistical Review of World Energy 2026, 2025 production. Regime: V-Dem Regimes of the World 2025 via Our World in Data. Joining production to regime class is this site’s own arithmetic: matched countries cover 99,400 of the Statistical Review’s 100,590 thousand barrels daily, the difference being regional residuals with no country. The same material appears in chapters 1 and N of Sustainable Energy — Without the Hot Air, 2026.
